Born to Emil and Cora Bruch in Waterloo, Iowa, Carl went to Iowa state before entering the army during World War 2. After the war, he played basketball for Waterloo. He was later the manager of Manufacturing Project Division of Plant and Production Engineering for Deere & Co., retiring in 1979.
Carl married Dorothy Hanson in 1941 and they had three daughters and one son.
