Born to Leroy and Anne McGee in Hammond, Louisiana, John played basketball at Hammond HS. He played basketball at Tulane where he studied law. John served in the U.S. Navy during World War 2and after the war continued his law studies and played for the Hurricanes in New Orleans. He became and FBI agent, and later was the chief of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Enforcement Division.

He married Evelyn Stout in 1954 and they had one daughter.
