Englund was a member of the Wisconsin NCAA champions of 1941. He went on to play 9 seasons professionally in the NBL and NBA. He served briefly in the Navy during World War 2. After playing, he officiated in the NBA.
He married Eunice (1918-2004) on April 12, 1940 and they had three sons, Gene, Jim and Robert, and two daughters, Susan Monroe and Kate Pfaendtner.
