Born in Akron to Charles and Ellen Gerber, Gerber attended Akron South High School for two years before transferring to West. He only became a regular player in his senior year, and then went on to Toledo, where he became All-American. He had an unorthodox shot and poor vision. He even experimented with a new invention called contact lenses in his senior year but quickly went back to his glasses. After one year for the Jim White Chevys, he served his country in the war. He returned to play three more seasons in the NBL.
After basketball, he worked for many years at George's Cigar and Gift Shop and then Doehler Jarvis.
He was married to Sandy.
