Born to Nicola and Maria Valvano, Valano played basketball at Newtown HS and would playe pro and semi-pro until a car accident ended his playing career. He went into coaching and was a high school coach for many years. He coached his three sons, one of whom, Jim, would go on to become a coach in his own right, leading NC State to the NCAA Championship in 1983.

Rocky married Angelina Vitale (1919-1995) and they had three sons.
