The Rochester native starred on the hardwood at the University of Baltimore before playing semi-pro and pro basketball around Baltimore. He entered the U.S. Army in 1942 to serve in World War 2.

He is the brother of fellow basketball player Irving Pierson, who confusingly went by the name "Buck."

Bucly was married to Nancy Barker (1920-2000).
