Born to William and Fannie Smith, Devon grew up in Indiana before going to Western Michigan. He became a high school teacher and coach after graduating.

Smith left his teaching and coaching job at Dowagiac HS in Michigan to help with the war effort by working at Fleetwing Aircraft in Bristol, Pennsylvania. While working out east, he would play some basketball with  the Trenton Tigers and the Allentown Rockets.


Devon married Kathryn Scheel in 1937.
