AMERICAN BASKETBALL LEAGUE (II)
19-15 .559, 3rd place
Round Robin:
6-2 .750, 2nd place
Troy was struggling in the early weeks of the season with a 3-9 record through mid-December. The Kingston Colonials were in first place but suffering at the turnstiles and began plans to withdraw from the ABL. Finally on December 19, 1939, Ed and Marty Connors, owners of the Haymakers, bought the Kingston franchise and absorbed the better players on the roster. Kingston players Bernie Fliegel, Pete Berenson, Carlie Johnson, Chick Reiser and Sammy Kaplan became Haymakers, with Joe Polcha, Moe Frankel, Mickey Kuppenberg and Bill Stanton being kept on from the original Troy roster. Nick Shaback and Bobby Synott were wold to Wilkes-Barre, while Sid Boardman and Joe FItzpatrick (who had been his rights come from Kingston in the purchase) were sold to Jersey. Ben Kramer and Joe Murphy were released. Barney Sedran, head coach at Kingston, took over the Haymakers' reins and the revamped Troy club finished the season with 16 wins in 22 games.
The team was known as the Haymakers prior to the merger, and were widely called the Celtics from that point on.
