Born in Weehawken, New Jersey, to Bruno and Bertha Knuppel, the 6'7 Knuppel went to West Side High School in Newark, but did not play basketball. He picked it up at Panzer College (now part of Montclair State University) and was a member of their great teams of the late 30's. He would play professionally for various teams in the 40's, mainly in the American League.
Herm and his wife Marian had a son and a daughter.
