Born to Dave and Regina Mager, Mager played basketball at Lafayette High School before enrolling at St. John's. He spent most of his first year there as a reserve player. He was at CCNY in 1947, and I do not know what is the reason behind the absence here. I don;t know if this gap means he served in the military or just dropped out of school.

At CCNY, he was an important piece of the squad in 1950 that won both the NIT and NCAA, and afterwards, he joined the Baltimore Bullets. However, Mager was arrested and charged with point shaving while at CCNY. A huge scandal at the time involive over 30 collegiate players, Mager was among the players booted from the NBA and banned for life. He pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor and was given a suspended sentence. He lived the rest of his life trying to hide from his basketball sins, working as an executive at Perfect Building Maintenance until retiring in 2000. Mager died of cancer in 2005.

He and his wife, Bernice, had a son and two daughters.
