After the first post-merger season, the NBA learned in 1949-50 that they could not exist as a 17-team league. Too many problems with travel and scheduling had surfaced, as well as too many small-market teams to make it a financially viable entity. The teams in Anderson, Denver, Waterloo and Sheboygan were dismissed, These subtractions were fairly understandable, and those teams formed the NPBL so they could continue on a scale more suited to their market size. Unfortunately for them, the NPBL lasted only one season, and those teams' existence also ceased.
Two NBA teams from large markets, the Chicago Stags and the St. Louis Bombers, both folded, due to poor ticket sales and large losses of investment. The NBA would shoulder on, but the loss of an imprint in two of the largest cities in the Midwest would hurt the league's visibility, at least in the short-run.
