After graduating from San Pedro HS, Sawyer went to UCLA for a year, but then spent almost two years in the army, stationed in the Far East. After his duty, we returned to UCLA, and then played with the Washington Capitols in 1950-51. He went on to teach in Whittier, California, and later at Orange Coast College. He also taught and coached in Japan for a couple years. He retired in 1996 and moved to Sequim, Washington, where he died in 2012.

He and his wife, Diane, had a daughter.
