Coming out of  St. Bonaventure, Murray was drafted in 1950 by the Chicago Stags in the NBA, but when the Stags folded, Murray was taken by the Baltimore Bullets in a dispersal draft. He averaged 13.7 points in 52 games for Baltimore before being sold on February 15, 1951, to the Fort Wayne Pistons. He finished the year with the Pistons, and after the season entered the U.S. military to serve in the Korean War. He returned to the Pistons after the war, playing in 1953-54. Murray was traded back to Baltimore on the eve of the 1954 season for Jim Fritsche, but a month later and 14 games into the season, the Bullets folded and Murray was selected by the Warriors in a dispersal draft.
