Russ DeVette graduated from Muskegon HS and enrolled at small Hope College in Michigan. He entered the USMC in 1943 to serve his country during World War 2, attending Denison College in Ohio as part of his training. After the war, he returned to Hope where he continued his basketball prowess. After graduating, he got a teaching job at Hope, as well as the head coaching job. During his time there, he also played for the NPBL's professional team in nearby Grand Rapids.
DeVette left Hope to serve in the Korean War, and returned to lead the University of Maine basketball team for a year before heading back home. Back at Hope College, he took back the reins of the basketball team as well as coaching the football squad, the baseball team and the women's track team. In 24 seasons of coaching the basketball team, he won nine MIAA titles and one NCAA Regional title. He stayed as coach of the basketball team through 1977.
He married Doris Koskamp in 1949 and they had six children.
