Born in Nashville to Clarence and Nelda Stone, Stone went to East High School. After high school, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War 2. He played four years at Austin Peay before being signed by the Alumnites in 1950. He was released on November 14, just two weeks into the season.
He moved to Florida not long after, where he was an avid golfer.
Jim married Alice "Louise" Kaylor (1929-2011) in 1951
