After graduating from Catherdral, Doyle went to Butler where he was an All-American in 1950. He went to play basketball for the  Grand Rapids Hornets, but when the team folded, rather than join a different squad, he returned to Cathedral as the head coach for the basketball team. He quit after two seasons to enter the furniture business.

He married Dolores Dezelan in 1955.
