Anderson enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1946, and attended Kansas Wesleyan afterwards where he played football and basketball. His younger brother Don played basketball after him at KWU, also.Gene joined the Hi-Spots after he was no longer eligible for athletics and Wesleyan.
He and his wife, Jackie, had three sons.
