At first wasn't sure on his identity. He was listed as Yellis and Yello.  But when I identified Carbondale player Nick Kitik, I saw that he played high school ball with a Mike Yelovich and then played on various independent and semi-pro teams together. And since coach Red Wallace used them both on numerous occasions, it seems logical that Mike Yelovich is the mystery "Yellis."

A graduate from Fell Township HS, Yelovich went to Lock Haven State and got his Masters in Education at Penn State. He was a teacher for many years.

Mike and his wife had a son and four daughters.

There IS a possibility that it could be Mike's brother Joe, who was also a prominent area athlete, but Mike seems a better fit.

Born in Catasauqua, Pennsylvania, to Joseph and Katherine Skvoretz, Andy played basketball and football at Lafayette, serving as the basketball team captain in his senior year. He would serve in the  U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1950-51 and after the war would also play some semi-pro football in Wilkes-Barre as well as playing for the Carbondale Aces. He worked for many years as a salesman and in the last ten years of his life as a bartender at the Brass Rail in Allentown.

Andy and his wife Audrey (whom he later divorced) had two sons and a daughter.

McGrane, a native and popular figure in Wilkes-Barre, enjoyed a long career in his hometown. A basketball star in high school, McGrane would go on to King's College, a private liberal arts school, where he made a name for himself on the court. He ventured to play with the Carbondale Aces of the ABL for one game, and went to work for Western Electric. He got a Master's Degree from the University of Scranton and was hired as the head basketball coach back at King's College. He would eventually become athletic director in 1963.

On the eve of his fifteenth year at the helm of the Monarchs, McGrane accompanied King's College's golf, tennis, bowling and cross-country teams to a large conference tournament at Siena College in Loudenville, New York. While there, McGrane hanged himself in his room at the Thunderbird Hotel in Latham, New York. Near as I can tell, no motive or reason was ever made public. He was 38.

McGrane married Mary Ann McManus and they had four sons and three daughters.

A high school basketball star at Fell Township High, Kitik joined the Carbondale Aces of the ABL and played before the club disbanded. Kitik joined the United States Air Force shortly after that, serving in the Korean Conflict. After leaving the service, Kitik played basketball sparingly around the Scranton / Wilkes-Barre area while working as a welder.

Kitik drowned in Lackawanna River in 1979. He had been missing a few days and his death was determined to be accidental. He was 47 years old and left behind two daughters.

The Carbondale Aces got off to a decent 5-3 start but were having trouble drawings fans. They struggled through the second half of December and January, and Red Wallace was relieved of his head coaching duties on January 13, 1952. Bernie Sarachek, who had been coaching the Scranton Miners until he quit in a salary dispute a few days prior, lead the Aces in a 76-71 loss to Manchester. On January 24, the Aces announced the team was ceasing operations. The league awarded the franchise to the Middletown Guards, with the Guards taking on the 6-8 record Carbondale had pieced together. Joe Wise was the coach of Middletown, and Frank Lewis, who had started the season with Bridgeport before being sent to Carbondale, was the only player who went from the Aces to the Guards. Middletown went 1-5 before the club withdrew from the league.

Born to Ezra and Anna Swartz, Jackie would serve in the Navy during World War 2. Jackie played baseball, football and basketball at East Stroudsburg after the war. He would join the Carbondale Aces after his last game at ESSTC in January of 1951 and appeared in two ABL games. He would make his mark as a high school football coach, first at Carbondale High School and then at Neshaminy High School where he lead the school to an unbeaten season in 1971.

He married Janice Elaine Nagle in 1951. They had at least one son.

Henry "Hank" Poppe entered the U.S.M.C. after high school, serving his country during World War 2. After the war ended, we went to Manhattan, where he was the high scorer on the basketball team. After he graduated, he singed on with the Aces in the ABL, and when the club moved to Carbondale part-way into the season, Poppe went to Bristol in the Eastern League. However, he was released and banned by the EBL when he was arrested in January of 1951 for his involvement in a point-shaving scheme that would rock college basketball to its core.

Poppe, along with Jack Byrnes, were arraigned on multiple felony charges of fixing games and conspiring to fix games. They had approached a college athlete by the name of Junius Kellogg with an offer of $1000 to shave points in an upcoming Manhattan game. Kellogg went to his coach, and they went to the police. In a sting, Kellogg set up Byrnes and Poppe and they were arrested, along with a couple of gamblers. This began to unravel the mystery around the game, and lead to many arrests and charges covering fixed outcomes to baskteball games over the past few seasons involving many school and players. Poppe would eventually be given a suspended sentence, but he was banned from basketball for life.

He died in 2000 at 75 years of age.

Pfeiffer enlisted in the army in August of 1945 was discharged that December. (Not sure how that worked with him still in high school, if it was an Army Reserve thing or if he was slated to go once he graduated but the end of the war changed that.) He went to Muhlenberg College and played a little basketball afterwards, appearing in one game with the Aces of the ABL. He worked as a guard and a driver for Loomis Armomred Car Servives for 37 years before retiring in 1989. He died of cancer in 1997.

Frank was married to Harriet Kepler in 1966.

McGee entered the U.S. Navy to fight in World War 2 in 1943. After the war, he enrolled at Muhlenberg College, and was a center during that program's best years when the school would stand toe-to-toe with some of the bigger programs in the East. He played pro basketball briefly with the Allenbeth Aces in the ABL.

He married Joyce Mace in 1952 and they had one son.

Lyon went to Penn on a football scholarship, but became the all-time point scorer for the school on the basketball court. After his freshman year, he went into the army, but after a year, returned to school. He scored 1333 points in his four years there, the first Penn player to hit the 1000 point mark. He played some pro basketball and semi-pro baseball after graduating before working as a manger of recruitment and college relations for the Continental Can Company in New York. He was only 39 years old when he died in 1966.

Herb married Roberta Pierce and they had two daughters and a son.

After graduating, he played a little pro ball with the Carbondale Aces but was focused on a career as an educator. He got his masters degree in education from Rutgers University and spent over 40 years as a teacher, coach and administrator.

Born to Thomas and Rose Clark, "Pete" was a gifted athlete, playing football, baseball and basketball in high school and then at Mount St. Mary's. After his freshmen year, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in the European theater in World War 2 and after as a medic. He returned to Mount St Mary's after the war where the 6'4 center finished his career with over a 1000 points. After graduating, he played a couple years of pro basketball with the Carbondale Aces. He would be the owner and vice-president of the Brunswick Rubber Company until retiring in 1987.

Pete married Pauline Mazellan (d. 2007) in 1953 and they had four sons and two daughters. Sadly, one of his sons, Douglas, passed away in 1956 at four months of age.

The AllenBeth team, named for their dual-hometowns of Allentown and Bethlehem, moved to Carbondale on December 28, 1950. The team was 1-13 at that point. It was rumored that Chink Crossin was going to come to the Aces when he quit the Wilkes-Barre team in early December, but that never occurred as he returned to the Barons later that month.

Born to Sophie and Harry Hammock, Hammock played basketball and baseball at Seton Hall Prep. He played both sports at St. Bonaventure for a year before joining the U.S. Army. After the war, he enrolled at Seton Hall where he played both sports with great acclaim. After graduating, he signed to pitch for Wytheville in the Class-D Blue Ridge League in 1949. He pitched well, going 7-4 with a 2.77 ERA. After baseball season, he played pro basketball with the Hartford Hurricanes and the Trenton Tigers in the ABL. 1950's baseball season saw him with Bristol in the Colonial League (Class-B but unaffiliated with any major league club.) That was his last season in organized baseball, although he apparently played some more basketball in the ABL with Carbondale in 1951-52. In 1960, Hammock moved to Oklahoma City where he owned his own insurance agency. He died in 1965 at the young age of 40.

Dick and his wife, Minna, had four sons and a daughter.
