He entered the army after high school, and fought in World War 2, earning five battle stars and a Purple Heart (from shrapnel in the leg) in the European theater. He was discharged in 1945, and enrolled at Loyola in Baltimore. As a freshman, his defensive prowess helped Loyola to defeat #1 ranked Seton Hall. He played all four years at Loyola and graduated in January of 1950, and signed with the Bullets right after. He played the remainder of the season with the Bullets and declined an offer to play for them in 1950-51. He moved to Allentown, Pennsylvania, in 1955 and began working with the Social Security Administration. He also took up tennis and became a very skilled amateur player.


He married Helen Talarovich (d. 1979) and they had two daughters.
