Entering the final month of the season, they would win 8 of their final 11 but that was still not enough to keep Pottsville from catching them in the final days of the season.

Wrapping up the season with a 19-9 record that was identical to the Packers, the two teams would meet in a one-game playoff to determine the regular season champions. The club rallied to beat Lancaster in the next two games on their home court to salt away the series victory. Facing Hazleton in the finals, Reading once again stumbled on the series opener on the road 61-53. Being a hotbed of basketball for two decades, much was expected from the Lumberjacks. Coached by Skeets Fiorella, who would later operate his father's sausage company with his sons, the Lumberjacks started off admirably enough, winning 8 of their first 15 games. However, they hit the skids on January 25 when they began a 13-game losing streak to finish the season. They plummeted to last place and the franchise would fold shortly after the season.

Head Coach:

Lou "Skeets" Fiorella (May 30, 1922 - January 29, 2008)

PLAYERS:

Billy Chappell

Sidney Chilnick (June 19, 1922 - August 1, 1965)

Zack Clayton (April 17, 1918 - November 20, 1997)

Milt Cohen (August 12, 1926 - November 8, 1999)

Jim Coughlin (August 18, 1919 - March 27, 1969)

Tony Derago (October 11, 1928 - March 21, 2006)

Dick DeWees (March 18, 1929 - July 19, 1986)

Jim Furey (March 28, 1928 - February 20, 1985)

Ken or Jim McAndrews

Rocco Parisi (October 27, 1923 - February 8, 2015)

Pepper Petrella (May 7, 1920 - December 21, 1991)

Max Siani (Ju;y 2, 1919 - February 26, 1988)

Frank Washington (April 4, 1921 - January 24, 2013)

Peach Basket Societyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03079674021097013096noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6584057222215509863.post-68709033931983733402024-02-14T12:41:00.000-08:002024-02-14T12:41:08.991-08:001947-48 Lancaster Red Roses (EPBL)1947-48 LANCASTER RED ROSES
EASTERN BASKETBALL LEAGUE - PENNSYLVANIA
14-14 .500, 4th place

Semi-finals: Lost to Reading, 2-1

Coming back from a season that saw them be the runner-up to the crown, the Red Roses had high aspirations but could not put together the hot streak they needed to compete. Head coach Frank Serany immediately released almost his entire roster, letting go of Tommy Gorman, Hal Korovin, John Kostic, Billy Letcher, and Eddie McCluskey and bringing back Rookie Brown and Pete Yousaitis as well as signing a new batch of players like Bink Manning and Moon Mullen. It still took a little while for the new-look lineup to pick things up, only winning 3 games at the end of calendar year 1947. But after that 3-5 start, Hazleton would go 6-2 in both January and February and win 9 of eleven before losing the season finale at Pottsville. They entered the playoffs and defeated those same Pottsville Packers in a hard-fought best of three that went all three games. In the championship against Reading, Hazleton defeated Reading, 61-53, in the opener at home, but would lose games 2 and 3 on the road, ending the season as the runner-up.

Head Coach:

Frank Serany )May 4, 1911 - April 27, 1982) Also played. Only Joe Cackovic, the Steelton HS star who j9ined the team in their fourth game, and Roche, survived the coaching change. A new and revamped Harrisburg won 3 of their first 5 under Maronic, but the team's fortunes did not change enough to claim a playoff spot. The Pottsville Maroons (aka Pros) and Allentown Rockets disbanded, and the Wilkes-Barre Barons left the league to join the ABL, which was no longer a top-tier league but more of a feeder league for the BAA. The Harrisburg Senators joined the league EPBL as did a different Pottsville club known as the Packers. The largest city in the state, Philadelphia, would also be represented by the Lumberjacks. Also joining the league were the Sunbury Mercuries and the Williamsport Billies.

The season commences on November 30, 1947, and with the exception of the Senators, the league was tightly bunched at the end of the calendar year, with only three games separating first place from seventh. Once the new year began, Reading began to pull away and enjoyed a three-game cushion in early February, but late charges from Pottsville and Hazleton brought the regular season to an exciting climax. The Packers won their last six games and 13 of their last 16 to catch Reading on the final weekend of the season with both clubs sporting a 19-9 record. The Mountaineers had a 9-1 stretch and lost to Pottsville in the season finale, keeping them just one game back at 18-10. Lancaster grabbed the 4th playoff spot, and on March 16, 1948, Pottsville defeated Reading, 60-52, in a playoff game that served to determine the regular season champion.

The playoffs began On March 18, with Pottsville facing Hazleton, followed the next day with Reading and Lancaster. Pottsville won the hard-fought opener against Hazleton, but the Mountaineers came back to win the next two and steal the series from the regular-season champions. Meanwhile, Lancaster stunned Reading with an opening-game victory, but would drop the next two to allow the Keys to win.

Reading was to face Hazleton in the best-of-three series to determine the champion. As was the case with the semi-final series, the team that won the opener wound up losing the series. After falling, 61-53, to Hazleton, Reading would rebound to win the second and third game, and therefore the championship of the league for the 1947-48 season.

Harrisburg Senators

Hazleton Mountaineers

Lancaster Red Roses

Philadelphia Lumberjacks

Pottsville Packers

Reading Keys

Sunbury Mercuries

Williamsport Billies

Peach Basket Societyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03079674021097013096noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6584057222215509863.post-48619051413946777112024-01-30T18:36:00.000-08:002024-02-05T06:40:21.850-08:00New updates, identifications, corrections, January 2024
Taking some time and looking back to fill in some holes or close some things out.

DETAILS ADDED:

Red Morrison, NBA - Died 2023

Johnny O'Boyle, NBA, ABL, EPBL - Died 1984

Bob Priddy, NBA, ABL - Died 2021, middle name added

Wally Sheil, ABL, EPBL - Added middle name

Devon Smith, ABL, EPBL - Full name added

Vince Vereschi, ABL, EPBL, NYSL - Added middle name

Leroy Watkins, ABL, EPBL - Middle name, place of birth added

PROPERLY IDENTIFIED:

George Faust, NYSL, EPBL - This was the name occasionally used by George Feigenbaum when he was double-dipping in two leagues at roughly the same time. The "new" Triplets would only win once in the next four games before Gallagher surrendered the team back to the league on December 20, 1946. The franchise was sold to a new ownership group in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, headed by local sportsman Herwood E. Hobbs. On January 6, 1947, Hobbs and his associates then sold the team to Clarence Messner, operator of the Minserville store chain. Jake Pitler, the GM in Binghamton, would move with the team to Pottsville. Despite being based in Pennsylvania, there was a team just across the northern border in Binghamton, New York, The Binghamton team started winnin g only one of its first 7 games and the franchise was transferred to Pottsville, Pennsylvania, by Christmas. The relocation and new personnel didn't help the club's fortunes much as they finished with only 7 wins.

The Wilkes-Barre Barons proved to be the class of the league. Under coach Ed White and lead by Cas OStrowski and the Chanecka brothers, the Barons roared to a 22-5 record with the other team giving them trouble was the Lancaster club, who beat them three times in the regular season and would meet them in the championship series. Reading and Hazleton grabbed the last two playoff spots but wer enever really a threat to Wilkes-BArre or even Lancaster, while Allentown was never really a factor.

In the playoffs, the powerful Barons struggled in their series with Reading, but managed to win both games to advance. Game one saw Reading hold the Barons to 45 points, but only could muster 41 points themselves. Game two saw the Baron's Ostrowski score 14 points along with mid-season addition Earl Craig's identical total to lead to a 62-58 victory and send them to the championship series. Lancaster had a pair of 10+ point wins over Hazleton in their sweep of the best-of-3 series. Ephrata (PA) legend Whitey Von Nieda scored 31 points for the Red Roses in the opening game, while Bink Manning lead the way with 24 points in the second.

The championship series began on March 23, 1947, in Lancaster. The Red Roses shocked the heavily-favored Barons in the opening game with a 59-54 victory. Von Nieda scored 20 while Tommy Bell, who started the season with Allentown, added 19. Moving to Wilkes-Barre three days later for game 2, the Barons defense shut down the Lancaster offense, holding them to under 40 points as they rolled to a 65-37 win. After some scheduling issues, the third and deciding game was held on April 1 in Allentown and the Barons rolled again, this time with a 70-54 score, to claim the championship.

Allentown Rockets

Binghamton Triplets / Pottsville Maroons

Hazleton Mountaineers

Lancaster Red Roses

Reading Keys

Wilkes-Barre Barons

Peach Basket Societyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03079674021097013096noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6584057222215509863.post-44212830087613606712024-01-03T15:23:00.000-08:002024-01-03T15:23:05.403-08:00Eastern Basketball League - Pennsylvania (EPBL)
As World War 2 came to an end and the soldier began to return home and the economy was shifting back from the war effort, the working class turned to sports for recreation more than ever. Professional basketball, which had been growing slowly prior to the war, was beginning to centralize and organize. The NBL, and to a lesser extent, the ABL, were the biggest organized professional leagues, bit in 1946 the BAA was formed in a large part by the owners of 5 NHL teams. The BAA would eventually siphon off the best of the NBL teams and become the NBA, and propel itself into prominence. But on the state level, smaller minor leagues (and largely semi-professional in reality) forme that same fall of 1946. Three leagues named the Eastern League, in based in Connecticut, New York and Pennsylvania, commenced and under the umbrella of an Eastern Basketball Association, operated independently but with codified rules and recognizing each other's contracts (with a few disagreements). The Connecticut league and the New York league last a few season before folding. But he Eastern League of Pennsylvania did much better. It would eventually expand out of state and across the nation, becoming the Continental Basketball Association which survived into the 21st century before finally ceasing operations.

There have been some great books and research done on the Eastern League, much better than anything I could ever do. (Robert Bradley and Syl Sobel have both written great books on the subject). But as I try to move forward in the pro basketball timeline, I figured I would at least look at it the same way I did other leagues and maybe fill in a few blanks along the way. I am planning on jumping back and forth between the EBL and the NBA as I move forward.
Peach Basket Societyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03079674021097013096noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6584057222215509863.post-26997005687984485362024-01-02T04:26:00.000-08:002024-01-02T04:26:13.457-08:00New updates, identifications, corrections, December 2023
Taking some time and looking back to fill in some holes or close some things out.

DETAILS ADDED:

Lefty Kintzing, ABL - exact date of death added

Leo Malone, ABL: Birth year 1890 not 1895, died April 2, 1960

Hubs McCord, ABL - Added middle name, exact date of death

PROPERLY IDENTIFIED:

Main Rich, ABL - Marion Johnston Rich (1903-1970)

CORRECTED:

Marty Barry, ABL - Date of death November 26, 1983

Hank Baude, ABL - Date of death June 24, 1977

Frank Radice, ABL - Date of death September 28, 1986, not 1987

NEW LEADS UNRESOLVED:

Peach Basket Societyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03079674021097013096noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6584057222215509863.post-14089119500685528472023-11-30T07:00:00.000-08:002023-11-30T07:00:47.155-08:00New updates, identifications, corrections, November 2023
Taking some time and looking back to fill in some holes or close some things out.

DETAILS ADDED:

Mort Freemark, ABL - Died February 23, 2021

Bobby Lewis, ABL - Died July 2, 2022

PROPERLY IDENTIFIED:

Joe Howard, ABL, EPBL - Joseph Francis Howard (1928-1993)

Tom Muller, ABL, EPBL - Thomas Jefferson Muller (1924-1965)

Reilly. BUt as I suspected years ago, it had to be an issue with his last name being shortened or anglicized. I figured his name may have been something along the lines of Zubyk, Zubak, Zubeck, etc. But I never thought much about "Zubic" being the last portion of a longer last name, and this would be the case. Following a fresh dive into Bill, I stumbled across a William Bezubic from Philadelphia, born in the same year I believed him to be born. Finding Bezubic;s World War 2 draft card, he was listed as 6'5 and 211 pounds which matched our player. To confirm I did some newspaper searches and found Bezubic listed in a story about a basketball game with the Chester Ukrainians (who I knew Zubic was already listed as a player) and his name appeared as "Zubic" in the box score.

So after a few years, the great Bill Zubic has been properly identified and William Paul Bezubic.

Bill Zubic (1918-1994)

Peach Basket Societyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03079674021097013096noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6584057222215509863.post-49433643588288151562023-10-02T08:22:00.000-07:002023-10-02T08:22:53.139-07:00New updates, identifications, corrections, September 2023
Taking some time and looking back to fill in some holes or close some things out.

DETAILS ADDED:

Morris "Mushy" Silver, ABL-AAU - Died 1980

Whitey Von Nieda, NBL, NBA, EBL- Died September 6, 2023

PROPERLY IDENTIFIED:

Frank "Speed" Caffey, NYSL

Tee "T-Bone" Connelley, ABL-AAU

Bennie Garrett, NYSL

CORRECTED:

NEW LEADS UNRESOLVED:

Don Hinds "in his 90's" in article published in 2008.

Peach Basket Societyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03079674021097013096noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6584057222215509863.post-85764592487017731102023-09-08T12:50:00.000-07:002023-09-08T12:50:54.808-07:00New updates, identifications, corrections, August 2023
Taking some time and looking back to fill in some holes or close some things out.

DETAILS ADDED:

Carl Frank, ABL/EPBL - Died May 18, 2023

Ken Kirchman, WSBL- Died May 28, 2023

Bob Laske, WSBL - Born January 5, 1926, Died May 28, 2022

Dick Schmeelk, NYSL - Died May 19, 2022

Dick Schroeder, WSBL - Died January 1, 2023

George Sella, EBL-Ct - Died January 25, 2022

Bob Stefanowski, EBL-Ct - Died November 27, 2022

Walt Yaskot, EBL-Ct - Died December 7, 2022

PROPERLY IDENTIFIED:

CORRECTED:

NEW LEADS UNRESOLVED:

Peach Basket Societyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03079674021097013096noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6584057222215509863.post-34497519877146893382023-07-06T07:58:00.000-07:002023-07-06T07:58:57.749-07:00New updates, identifications, corrections, June 2023
Taking some time and looking back to fill in some holes or close some things out.

DETAILS ADDED:

Bill Roach, AABL - Died January 14, 2022

Wayne See, NBA , NPBL - Died July 22, 2019

PROPERLY IDENTIFIED:

CORRECTED:

NEW LEADS UNRESOLVED:

Isaiah "Ike" Owen, AABL - Radaris lists him as deceased.
