Lyon went to Penn on a football scholarship, but became the all-time point scorer for the school on the basketball court. After his freshman year, he went into the army, but after a year, returned to school. He scored 1333 points in his four years there, the first Penn player to hit the 1000 point mark. He played some pro basketball and semi-pro baseball after graduating before working as a manger of recruitment and college relations for the Continental Can Company in New York. He was only 39 years old when he died in 1966.

Herb married Roberta Pierce and they had two daughters and a son.
