Born to Peter and Florence Otskey, Jerry went to St. Francis in New York and played pro and semi-pro basketball for a few years until the advent of World War 2, when Otskey enlisted in the U.S. Army after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He was stationed at Fort Ethan Allen in Vermont and while on leave would play some basketball.
