Born to Howard and Mary Ann Hawkins in Huntington, West Virginia. He attended Tennessee on a football scholarship, also playing basketball and tennis. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War 2, and then after graduating, played professional basketball for a couple seasons.
Returning to Huntington, he owned and operated Hawkins Tie and Lumber Company for many years.
He married Sara Ann Sammons in 1946 and they had two sons and a daughter.
