Born to Carl and Kate Watkins in Drumright, Oklahoma.He played baseball and basketball in high school,and then went on to pitch at University of Oklahoma. He served in the USMC during World War 2, working as a radio operator in the Pacific before being stationed in China. He returned to Oklahoma, playing on their Final Four team in 1947. He played for the Drillers and Redskins (and maybe the Athletics... not sure) before getting a teaching degree at East Central University. He taught and coached at Macomb High School and later worked as a county cleark and junior engineer for the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.

He married Christena Adams in 1948 and they had two sons.
