Born to Guy and Pansy Shrider, Dick served in the miliary during World War 2, and played basketball professionally for the Vagabonds and Knicks before becoming the head coach at Miami. He later wound up as the AD at Miami Universoity of Ohio from 1964 to 1988.

He married Carol Farley and they had a son and a daughter.
