Born in Fort Wayne to Murray and Alice Mendenhall, Bud played for the state champions at Central and enlisted into the U.S. Navy after graduating. He attended Rice while in the Navy, playing on their basketball team. Following his discharge from the service, he enrolled at Indiana. After one season with the Packers, coached by his father, he taught and coached at various high schools and was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 1996.
He was married to Miriam and had two sons and a daughter.
