Hannum was a graduate of Hamilton HS in L.A. He played basketball at USC, with a brief interruption to serve his country during World War 2. He played nine seasons professionally, mostly of the bench despite a fairly lengthy career. He moved on coaching, where he coached some of the game's greatest players (Dolph Schayes, Wilt Chamberlain, Bob Pettit, Rick Barry).

A professional coach in the NBA and ABA for over 15 seasons, Hannum was elected to the Naismith Hall of Fame in 1998.
