Born in Ohio to Martin and Monica Kubiak, Kubiak grew up in Toledo, where he attended and played basketball and baseball at Macomber and Woodward High School. He moved on to play both sports at Bowling Green, and afterwards played basketball professionally for the Waterloo Hawks and the Denver Refiners. He also played baseball in the minor leagues briefly.

Leo married Suzanne Mercer Maddock in 1950.
