Born in Houston to Alexander and Jeanette Lowther, and raised in Alexandria, Lowther was a track and basketball star at Bolton HS before leading off to LSU. His time at LSU was interrupted by World War 2, where Lowther served as a bomber in the Air Corps. 

He was married to Merriam and they had two sons and a daughter.
