ReplyDeleteAssuming the above info is correct, his obituary from the October 17, 1983 Martinsville Reporter-Times confirmed he played for a state championship-winning Martinsville HS in 1932-33. In his later life he was employed at United Oil Company. (newspapers.com/image/551440604)
The February 19, 1940 Indianapolis Star issue's caption to its photo lists Gene Cramer as being on Stewart-Warner along with Lloyd "Bob" Baker (newspapers.com/image/106023144). Given that these players were around during the same time, both having odd nickname choices, geographic region similarity, and brevity of NBL careers for the Indianapolis Kautskys, I have zero doubt that "Bill Cramer" is actually Crawford Eugene Cramer. While I didn't find a smoking gun article indicating that "Gene" Crawford played for the Kautskys, the evidence at this point is overwhelming it was him.
Other misc. fact I found:
-Gene Cramer had a surgery in March 1940 for appendicitis (newspapers.com/image/551411224)
Addendum: I can't verify the specific city he was born in in Indiana, but his obituary states he died in Brazil, IN.
