Phares was a star athlete in high school before heading to WVU. As a Mountaineer, he was a quarterback for the football team as well as a pitcher on the baseball team and a basketball player. He played briefly for the Pittsburgh Pirates in the NBL. After his playing days, he and his wife, Mary Abbott (1918-2002), operated a Nursery School in Columbus, Ohio, where he died at 58 years of age in 1974. They had two daughters.
