Born in Oshkosh, Lautenschlager went to Oshkosh High School and from there attended Oshkosh Teachers College (now the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh) where he played both basketball and football. He played for nine seasons for the Redskins. He worked as an NBA referee from 1949 to 1951.
Ruben married Lucille (1919-2012) and they had four children: Jack Lautenschlager, Mark Lautenschlager, Anne Lautenschlager and Beth Olson.
