Mazziotta went to Georgetown and played basketball there but was forced to leave school folowing the death of his father. He would play a couple of seasons in the ABL while finishing his schooling at Iona. John would go on to get a Masters Degree in History from Columbia before going on to teach and coach for many years. He was one of the winningest coaches in New Jersey state history at the time of his retirement.

John died in 2011 from injuries suffered in a fall at home.


He married Marjory in 1963 and had two daughters, Cassie (1964-2010) and Hannah, and one son.
