Jackie Allen was born in Massachusetts to Frank and Mary Allen. After leading De La Salle Academy to state prominence in the early 1940's, Allen would serve in World War 2 with the U.S. Army in Europe. After the war, he starred at URI before leaving school to become a firefighter. He would play basketball in Connecticut's Eastern League and for the ABL's Manchester club during this time. In 1956, he quit the fire department to return to school, attending Providence College and graduated in 1960 while being the head coach for the freshmen team. He would return to De La Salle as a teacher and coach, and in 1964 moved to Watertown, Massachusetts to teach junior high and coach the high school team.

Allen died in 1966 after a brief illness at the age of 43. URI held a special memorial night for him during the next season. He left behind his wife, Mary, three sons and a daughter.
