Peterson served in the U.S. Army during World War 2.

Horace earned a Master's Degree from the University of Alabama and would work for the Bessemer Board of Education for 35 years. He was the principal at Jess Lanier High School until retiring in 1983.

Horace married Sarah Horton (1924-1999) in 1943 and they had one son and one daughter.
