The youngest of three basketball-playing brothers (Lloyd and Ray being the other two), the Spitzer family settled in Pinson, Alabama, in 1932. Herb and his brothers played basketball as youths and were teammates on the Whiz Kids in the 1947-48 season of the Southern Basketball League. The 6'4 Herb would remain a popular figure in his hometown of Pinson, founding scholarship funds for the high schools there as well as being on the board of directors for the Cattleman's Association and the Jefferson County Soil and Water Association.
He married Patsy Oden (the sister of teammate Lindsey Oden) in 1953.
