A member of the Utah NCAA Champions, Smuin's collegiate career was interrupted by World War 2. He returned to college after the war, and after graduating, he signed with the Philadephia Warriors in August of 1950, but would spend the year playing with the Utica Pros in the ABL. He would coach and teach high school for many years in Utah.
Dick married Joan and they had two sons.
