Born to Clayton and Anna Parsons, Don was a basketball star at Rutgers. Parsons was drafted by the New York Knicks in the sixth round of the 1950 draft. However, he turned down the $3800 contract offered by the Knicks to work at Bendix in Teterboro, New Jersey. He did, however, play with the nearby Paterson Crescents in the ABL for a year, being so close to his place of employment.

He and his wife, Willy, had a son, Gary, who was a Division 2 Basketball Player of the Year at Rollins College in Florida. Parsons' grandson, Chandler, plays in the NBA with the Memphis Grizzlies.
