From Brooklyn, O'Boyle went to college at Colorado A&M (now Colorado State University). While out there, he also competed in the AAU tournament. He returned back east after school, signing with the Washington Capitols. He was sold to Wilkes-Barre on December 17, 1951. Next season, he played a brief stint with the Milwaukee Hawks in the NBA, playing in 5 games.
