The 6'11 Ludka was not a particularly skilled athlete but due to his height he gave basketball a try. He struggled though most of his college career, leaving school after his junior year due to the death of his father. He would play for the House of David for a few years and played two games with the Wilkes-Barre Barons, not scoring a point.

He married Marie DellaRocca in 1949 and they had four daughters.
