Azary went from Commerce HS to Columbia, scoring on the basketball court the entire way. As a member of the National Guard, Azary was hurt in a training accident that sent shrapnel into his thigh. At first his playing career was in jeopardy, but he successfully returned to the court. He finished at Columbia with 1037 points and was drafted by the Boston Celtics in the 7th round of the 1951 draft. He wound up playing with the Scranton Miners instead.
Azary died in his sleep of a heart attack in 1981 at 51 years of age.
