After a stellar basketball tenure at Chaminade HS, Mullaney entered the U.S. Army and served in World War 2 with the  Air Corps. After the war, he went to Holy Cross where he lead the Crusaders to the NCAA title. He played one season with the Boston Celtics before turning to coaching. Starting coaching college teams at Norwich University, he quickly moved to Providence, where he coached for 14 seasons and won two NIT titles. That got him to jump to the NBA, and coached to years for the Lakers before being moving to the ABA, where he coach four different teams in five years. After one more season leading a team in the NBA, he returned to Providence where he coached four more seasons before retiring.

He married Jane Washburn and they had four sons and a daughter.

Other sources say he was born in 1925, but birth certificate, Social Security application and military records say 1924.
