Born to Leopold and Emma Janotta, Howie went to Lodi HS and was a B-24 pilot in World War 2. He played pro basketball briefly and afterwards continued work as a pilot, first for Aramco and later for AT&T. After retiring, he became John Travolta's personal pilot.

Janotta was a natural athlete, playing minor league baseball in 1949 and as a senior was the number one ranked senior tennis payer in Texas.

He and his wife Marlene had two daughters.
