Born to Adam and Sylvia Herman, Bill attended Dover HS before going to Mount Union. After his freshman year, he entered the U.S. Navy and saw action in World War 2. He returned to Mount Union after the warm lettering in basketball and golf. Herman played pro basketball for a couple seasons after graduating.
