Born to Charles and Verabelle Hazen in Chicago, Hazen grew up in South Bend, Indiana. While in college at Indiana State, Hazen played basketball and baseball. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War 2, and then played one season for the Boston Celtics.

He married Betty Jane Zimmer (1926-2011) in 1951.

According to military records and Social Security records, he was born in March, not February like most other encyclopedias report.
