Born to Jacob and Florence Bornheimer, Jake's older brother Bill played professional basketball in the ABL and with other independent teams. After high school, Jake joined the U.S. Navy in the summer of 1945 at the closing of World War 2. He played one season at Muhlenberg before signing with the Warriors.
