Born to Earl and Elizabeth Gardner in Lagoda, Indiana. After leading New Market HS to three county basketball titles, he enrolled at Wabash, where he stayed for two years before entering the Navy to serve his country in World War 2. After the war, he enrolled at DePauw. He played one season for the Lakers and got a Masters Degree in Education at the University of Indiana before moving to Dayton to become a high school teacher and coach. He coached high school ball for 25 years at Oakwood, and retired there after 33 years of teaching. Gardner died in 2005 at 82 years of age.
He was married to Phyllis Lewis (1925-2010) in 1950 and they had one daughter.
According to birth records, his middle name is Barton and not Barker, as reported elsewhere.
