Born to Williams and Bernice Bishop, Gale grew up on the family farm in Sumas, Washington. He went to Washington State, with some time in the U.S. Army during World War 2 interrupting his college studies. He played while in the army, and in an AAU game scored 62 points. He played a couple season in the Pacific League before joining the Philadelphia Warriors for a season. During this same period, he also played baseball for four years in the Boston Braves organization.

He was married to Anita Bothell and had four children. He later remarried to Sally Bethke.
