Served in the military during World War 2, stationed in the Philippines. After the war, he went briefly attended Boston College before playing pro basketball.

He owned and operated an insurance company in Long Island. He also founded anti-fraud companies AutoCheck and CARCO. He sold hs insurance company in 1972 and moved to Florida. Coulby and his wife gave a lot of their time to helping troubled youths, 

He and his wife, Jane (1924-2015), had three daughters and a son.
