Born to Robert and Kathryn Gantt, Gantt was a football and basketball star at Duke, named All-Conference in both sports. He also ran track at Duke. He served in the navy for the war, and then played basketball professionally for the Capitols. He worked as a hospital administrator in Saudi Arabia before returning to North Carolina. He then worked at Haywood County Hospital.
Gantt died following a lengthy illness in 1994.
Bob was married to Barbara Glenn (1928-2005). They had two daughters and a son.
